The stadium was jammed packed and both teams were ready.  It was a wonderful evening for
football.  Right away the FALCONS moved the ball at will on the first drive until an INT stopped
them cold.  It was an 5 and out pattern and the CB timed it good.  The pass should have been
harder but the first game gitters were high
.

August 27,
2004 At Port Isabel.   Falcons 16  Port Isabel 13 OT
Stats:  (SO) Luis Campos 23-131 yrd rushing
(JR) B. Kretz 13-30 228 yrds passing
(SR) V. Martinez 5 catches for 87 yrds.
P. Degollado 3 field gols and 1 extra point-Game winner FG in OT
DEFENSE - 2 INT and held the PI Offense off balance. WALKER,SPRINGER,RODRIGUEZ.
The seconday was making big plays. ORTIZ at FS(i think) played well.  I dont have the
roster numbers so I cant tell for sure who is making the plays. (Walker 11 tackles)

What a game.  A packed stadium and a great everning for football.  Both teams made some
mistakes but I think it was both great Defenses that were causing the mistakes.  This was a
defensive game and the Falcon D stopped them in OT and allowed the offense to score to win.

What Worked:   DEFENSE. DEFENSE. DEFENSE. The defense played great and  LBs were hitting
hard and Walker has adjusted well to D.  We was laying some hits to those RBs. There was one play
that the RB hit WALKER head on and WALKER didnt even budge.  If an RB is 175lbs and hits
WALKER at 300 lbs, that RB is not going anywhere.  Walker was in the backfield in almost every
play.  Look under the photos section of this game and there is one pic of Walker comming off the
snap.

LBs Rodriguez and Springer were hitting HARD.  They are quick side to side and have a good read
on the ball.  One play where SPRINGER was cramping up he had to come out.  Then on the first
play he was out PI had a 40 yrd run. The rushing TD for PI was a result of the RB bouncing to the
outside on a 4th and 2.  The D Cord. called the right play but the RB bounced outside when the
middle was clogged.  So, that was not a result of a bad D play but a smart RB play by PI.

What Worked:  Special Teams. With the 3 successful field goals by Pablo Degollado, the FALCONS
have another weapon in their arsenal.  It showed on the field that Special Teams had been practiced
on during practice and it payed off.  GREAT JOB!  Its nice to know that Pablo can give us some
points from the 20.

What Worked: Passing and Running Kretz took some time to get rid of the nerves but he still has
212 yrs passing.  So, with the passworking, the PI Defense started playing on their heels and BAM
the Offensive Cor. called the right run play and the result was a 55 yrd TD run by campos.  So even
though Kretz had some bad passes, the Coaches stayed true to the pass and Kretz built his
confidence back up, even after the INT's.  Good job coaches.  The success of the run was because
the pass was working.  Campos is not a very strong back but all he needs is a little whole and hes
gone.
The screen plays to him and Venus worked well and should work all year.  I would have liked to see
Kretz run an option to the right and then drop back and toss it to the open recievers left open by
the LB what was sucked in.

More Fine Tuning:  Passing Routes and catching: We all saw the dropped passes and, in my opinion
if it touched your hands, you should catch it.  BUT, they had defenders in their face so it can be
hard.  Some of the routes the WR were running were a little sloppy.  The cuts were not as crisp as
they should be.  The QB and the WR should be able to communicate if the QB sees the CB playing
back with a lot of cushion and signal to the WR to run a QUICK 5 and turn/slant/out.  If the QB
sees the CB in the WR face then one on one coverage can be picked apart with a "go" route and
burn the CB.
(Played to perfection by Matt Garza and the great WR's of 2002)
